The moment Inspector Danilov lays eyes on the dismembered body, he realises that he has an exceptional case on his hands. And when the first body is followed by another, and another, each displaying a new bloody message, he has no option but to face the truth. He is dealing with the worst kind of criminal someone determined, twisted...and vengeful.

Someone who must be caught...whatever the cost.

Death in Shanghai is the first novel in M J Lee's Inspector Danilov series, perfect for fans of Philip Kerr.

Death in Shanghai Inspector Danilov Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) M J Lee Hugh Kermode HarperCollins Publishers Limited Books

I found this mystery/police procedural very engaging. The characters of Danilov and Strachan are well-developed, and they are interesting enough to make me want to read the next installment. Minor characters also are described well enough to make their actions credible. The plot is complex but explained well enough that the reader can follow Danilov’s thinking as the investigation develops. I figured out the perpetrator just before s/he was revealed (no spoilers here), which was satisfying. I also like the setting of 1920s Shanghai with the interaction of several nationalities located in a Chinese city. The crimes are gruesome, and I found the heroes' physical resilience unrealistic, which are criticisms that could apply to many mysteries and police procedurals. Otherwise, I liked this debut of the Inspector Danilov series very much. It would make a great movie!

Wow really enjoyed this mystery. The trials of Inspector Danilov was very interesting. When you reach the closing chapters i sure wouldn't have guessed who was the killer. Good luck to the next reader.
I am torn between 2 stars and 3 stars. The novel takes place in the mid 1920s in Shanghai but I can't honestly say that the author really captured the atmosphere of Shanghai the way Tom Brady's Master of Rain did for me. The author's writing itself is quite good but his story construction is a little too mechanical and predictable in places. For example, there are short passages in the voice of the serial killer himself but cringed at each one- almost word for word I could have lifted the same passages from any of a hundred third rate murder mysteries. Towards the end, once detective Danilov has identified the killer the writing becomes more cryptic and forced. Through the 37 chapters I would give the book three stars. What killed it for me is the epilogue (spoiler alert)- a well-written book a man who has been shot multiple times and fallen into a river doesn't live. Here he does and is clearly destined to lurk in another Danilov novel. This epilogue really ruined it for me.Hence two stars. I can't understand why a competent editor would permit this to happen. No more Danilov novels for me. I might try the Samuel Peppys novel down the road- the author can hold your attention.
It was an enjoyable read, but with a bit more fleshing out of the characters, it could have been so much more.

Some motivations for actions seemed inexplicable, and simple mistakes ( why was someone in 1928 Shanghai singing a Louis Prima song not written until 1936?) destroyed the carefully crafted atmosphere of the book.
Inspector Danilov has become one of my favourite detectives. I enjoy MJ Lee's writing style, and love Danilov's relationship with Strachan. The narrative is fast-paced, and Danilov's comments help break the tension.

Shanghai in the late 1920s adds another exotic dimension to the intrigue, with added insight into a time long past, in so many ways, yet timeless in others. And Danilov's attempts to use modern policing methods, fighting against British arrogance and indifference, make an interesting statement about the politics of the era.
This is a readable book. The characters are one dimensional and the narrative tends to drag at times. To compare this to the Philip Kerr (Bernie Gunther) novels (as quoted in the book description by above) is a travesty. Do not purchase this expecting to get a novel comparable to a a Philip Kerr novel. It is not.
Death in Shanghai is an early work of M. J. Lee, who has gone on to pen four more Inspector Danilov mysteries, the intriguing Jayne Sinclair genealogical mysteries, a very funny Samuel Pepys mystery, and now the first of a new series starring DI Ridpath.

Mr. Lee resided in Shanghai, where he picked his knowledge of the local color and created a vivid thriller placed 90 years ago. I spotted a few of what I call "missteps" that ultimately do not take away from the narrative.

I would love to see Inspector Pyotr Danilov serialized on screen, but I can only imagine the logistical nightmare it would be to re-create Shanghai during that volatile era.
Billed as a historical thriller it is written as a police procedural/mystery set in corrupt Shanghai in 1928. The story and the writing are both straightforward and good. The 2 main characters are well developed and likable. One plays the other subtlety as a foil. Refreshingly, the author appears more interested in entertaining his readers rather than impressing them with his mastery of letters and showing off his knowledge. The plot is predictable and it’s not a page turning thriller. Except for one scene in the middle and the ending it has no suspense to speak of. But I did find it entertaining, which is a very good thing. One warning. It contains some gory violence which may be objectionable to some. There is a sequel which I plan to read. Three and a half stars.
